I invite
you all to visit my new site
called :|fringe|: It's sure to cause at least 1.5% of your daily recommended
allowance of mirth, though perhaps not in the way I intended. However you take it,
please do visit.

The word is in. Stay. Of course it
would be ridiculous to assume I'd receive crass emails telling me to take my site with me
to the bottom of the ocean, or wherever mean people tell other folks to go when they don't
like them. Even so, I am surprised and amazed at the outpouring of goodwill and
support for the Archives.
Now that I think a little on it, I wonder why I
am surprised. As I've said before, it's not like this site hasn't been its own
reward. Indeed, over the years, I've come to realize that its not for anything other
than the fans that I keep it going. I don't care about it for my sake, certainly,
and I can't imagine doing this for money (though I'm not opposed to making a little here
and there).
Such as it is, and heartfelt entreaties to keep
the site going being what they are, I cannot in good conscience leave it behind.
Now the kicker. One of the reasons I had
to get your opinions on the matter is because of my upcoming journey. Yes, I am
going to be moving to a far away place (but not so far off, either). As you may or
may not know, I am graduating from Virginia Tech this May 2003. Exciting, no?
For my graduation present, some of my family
got some money together and bought a two-week ticket to Ireland. Well. I don't
have to tell you that one of my lifelong obsessions has been the Fair Isle. I was
into Irish/Celtic mythos before I even heard about Tolkien. In fact, I can safely
say that my interest in Ireland helped fuel my interest in Tolkien.
I won't go into the process of decision, but
the long and short of it are -- I have decided to move there...permanently. I'm
intending on keeping my current web host and domain, so you won't see any visible changes,
at least not right now.
The month of May will be most hectic for me, as
I graduate May 9 and fly into Dublin on the 12th. The remainder of the month will be
devoted to finding a job (anyone living on the western coast
of Ireland interested in hiring a web/graphic designer?) and a place to
live. I don't anticipate difficulty there, although I am somewhat concerned over the
issue of a work authorization or permit, which is required for all non-EU nationals, and
even then is only good for up to a year.
I am in the process of saving as much money as
I can, and I am going to try and raise some funds through this site. I have set up
an "Ireland Fund" using the Amazon.com Honor System
PayBox (see the friendly Irish fellow on the right?) which will allow you to donate a few
bucks if you want. I will also be setting up my own personal "store",
wherein I'll be selling many of my personal items, especially my entire book collection,
which is quite extensive and all quite inexpensive. While I won't go so far as to
beg, I do ask that you strongly consider giving to the Ireland Fund. Not only will your donation or purchase of
item(s) help me on my way to a new life in a new country, but you will indirectly be
supporting the continued life of the Tolkien Archives.
If you live in Ireland and are interested in
getting in contact once I arrive, feel free to email me at . If
you have a place to rent out or a possible job opening (please take a moment to check out
my resume), please don't hesitate to let me know.
Anything you can do to help is more than appreciated.
