Radagast the Brown
Radagast the Brown was one of the five members of the
White Council. He was of the race of Istari, who came from Valar to aid in the
struggles of Men and Elves and other good races agains the evil of Melkor.
Radagast's primary concern was with nature, with birds
and trees and living things. He kept to himself for the most part, and dwelt with
the animals of the forest. In concerning himself so much with the animals, however,
he neglected his greater duty to the Men and Elves. In this he was foolish; but he
did not turn to the Power of Sauron, as did Saruman.
Radagast had a hand in the rescue of Gandalf from the
tower of Orthanc, for it was he who sent the great Eagle Gwaihir Windlord to seek word
from Saruman. Gwaihir rescued Gandalf, who was able to return to Rivendell in time
to take part in the rescue of Frodo from the Ring-wraiths.
